The center of global economic development has shifted to the Asia-Pacific Region. Growing internal demand in the region’s economies, their sufficient financial resources for economic policy maneuvers as well as intensive economic cooperation within the region provide grounds to believe that this region will continue to outpace others in terms of economic growth.
Russia’s chairmanship in APEC is an opportunity for Russia to demonstrate its potential to its APEC partners and enhance its positions in the APR economy, noted Gleb Ivashentsov, deputy head of the Russian APEC Study Center. He acknowledged during the round table discussion, “Capabilities of Russia’s APEC chairmanship: Prospects for state and business,” that Russia’s involvement in that fast growing region has so far been insignificant.
Pavel Kadochnikov, executive director of Russian APEC Study Center, also noted during the presentation of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific 2012 report that Russia’s chairmanship in APEC is perfectly timed. During Leaders Week it will be possible to focus on Russia-proposed APEC priorities for 2012, which include the liberalization of trade and investment, regional economic integration, ensuring food security, improving transport and supply chains, and intensive cooperation of the APEC economies aimed at innovation and growth.
According to analysts, the successful promotion of Russia’s initiatives has been largely due to public-private partnership. Therefore, it is especially important that Russian businesses play an active role in the preparation for the APEC-2102 meetings, proposing their own initiatives with regard to these priorities.
APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) is a key body promoting interaction with business communities. Its goal is to draft proposals on facilitating trade and investment in APEC as well as on technological and economic cooperation. This year ABAC is chaired by Ziyavudin Magomedov of “Summa Group” Co.
